LOS ANGELES – Aug. 30, 2010 – The West Coast edition of “StartupCamp, Comm Edition” is taking shape, with nominations of early-stage tech companies still being accepted for one of the few coveted presentation slots that remain. This unique, communications technology-focused event is being held in conjunction with the Internet Telephony Expo (ITEXPO) Oct. 4 – 6 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
StartupCamp is a fast-paced, “ready, set, pitch” event that gives early-stage entrepreneurs the opportunity to pitch their communications innovations and get real-time feedback from an audience of industry leaders, media and investors.
Applicants to date include GeoGraffiti, a verbal billboard for sharing and retrieving messages; Cloud Telecomputers, an all-glass smartphone for the business desk; and FastCall411, a platform merging telephony and local search. Others vying for presentation spots include the 2600hz Project; AdelaVoice; Freespee; MedTaker; Ringio; Vokle and NumberTank.
Up to five startups will be selected to give five-minute presentations at the event. At no cost, selected companies will also be offered booth space at ITEXPO and an opportunity to share their innovations with thousands of attendees. Early-stage companies building services or applications leveraging communications technologies that wish to join the pitch roster should apply online no later than September 10. Slots will be awarded the following week.
Jeff Bonforte, CEO of Xobni, will keynote the event. Bonforte has been actively involved in the future of communications for years, dating back to his involvement in what became the Gizmo Project, and to his executive roles with Yahoo!’s Real-time Communications Group.
Twilio, a leader in the fast-growing field of cloud communications, is back as platinum sponsor of StartupCamp; the event debuted at ITEXPO in Miami earlier this year.
"Our first StartupCamp was such a huge success that we want to repeat the buzz, the vitality and the optimism that everyone felt after Miami,” said StartupCamp co-founder Larry Lisser. “We’re well aware of the impact – both substantively and symbolically – that early-stage tech companies can have in creating jobs, returning capital investment and contributing to overall economic growth in North America. So to those communications entrepreneurs looking for instant gratification and feedback, we say: ‘Come join us at StartupCamp. You’ll be glad you did!’ ”
