LONDON (Aug. 19, 2014) –Truphone, the world’s first global mobile operator, hosted Dangerous Demos, a competition of the most risky and entertaining technology demonstrations, at ClueCon 2014, an annual telephony and voice over IP developer conference in Chicago on Wednesday, Aug. 6.
Dangerous Demos were started by Truphone’s Head of Research, James Body, to identify new and emerging technology that can eventually be deployed by Truphone or other carriers and mobile operators.
“The idea behind the Dangerous Demos series of competitions really evolved from Truphone’s own history,” said Body. “When we started, we debuted our own technology in risky, challenging and unproven ways, such as making the first live, public mobile VoIP call on Nokia phones in 2005 at the VON Conference in Stockholm and then on the iPhone in 2007 at DEMO in San Diego. Today, much of the technology that we debuted first as a live demonstration was at the time considered impossible, but now is possible. And we’re deploying some of that today in our own Truphone network and inside our flagship service, Truphone World.”[i]
For this year’s ClueCon Edition, James Tagg, Truphone CTO and founder, and James Body, head of research and development, vetted the cream of the crop in the developer world awarding the riskiest, most entertaining and audience favorite competitors.
“Dangerous Demos at ClueCon reached a new high this year, thanks to the stellar group of competitors assembled, including some of the finest voice and web developers surrounding telephony and real time communications,” said James Tagg.
Truphone awarded glass trophies with etched depictions of the most recognized buildings and structures from all 8 Truphone Zone countries in three categories.
- Riskiest Demo - awarded to Silent Circle’s Phil Zimmermann, creator of the Blackphone for iOS and Android.
- Most Entertaining Demo – awarded to Ben Klang of Mojo Lingo for his incentivized interactive language instruction service built upon an Interactive Voice Response system.
- Audience Favorite Demo – awarded to Emil Ivov of Bluejimp SARL for Jitsi Video Bridge.
“Demos that are done live are always very dangerous for the presenters,” said Brian West, organizer of ClueCon 2014. “Truphone’s efforts to have the best of the best push the envelope to the bleeding edge shows us today, what we’ll all be doing with our phones and tablets tomorrow.”
